ARMAGH starlet Ross McQuillan has signed an International Rookie Contract with Aussie Rules giants Essendon.

The 20-year-old Cullyhanna clubman impressed the Melbourne-based ‘Bombers’ with his speed, kicking ability, drive and determination in trials in Australia and the initial two-year deal he has signed will see him link up with former Tyrone star Conor McKenna.

Ross, son of Armagh player Martin McQuillan, was outstanding for Armagh at U20 level in 2018. He broke into the Orchard county senior team later that summer and made his Championship debut in the Qualifier against Roscommon and was also involved in Kieran McGeeney’s squad early in 2019 with substitute appearances in the Dr McKenna Cup final and in the draw with Clare in Division Two.

Essendon general manager Adrian Dodoro says the St Patrick’s talent has the qualities required to be a success in the AFL.

"After extensive sessions with Ross, we believe he has what it takes to become a successful AFL player given his lateral movement, skills on both sides of his body and kicking ability,"

"Ross ran an outstanding time of 2.77 seconds for his 20-metre sprint, which would make him the quickest player on our list.

"Most importantly, Ross displays the Essendon values through his drive and determination to succeed. We look forward to officially welcoming Ross into the club when he arrives in November."
