Neil Lennon has a chance to secure a historic treble Treble for Celtic on Saturday afternoon when they face Hearts in the Scottish Cup final in Hampden Park.

The game will be played on May 25, a date etched in the minds of all Celtic fans as it was on May 25 1967 that Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup.

Given the recent deaths of Lisbon Lions Billy McNeill and Stevie Chalmers, the game takes on added significance and poignancy for many.

However, even though Neil Lennon is on the brink of a historic victory, many fans are voicing dismay about his current stint at Parkhead.

The Lurgan man has had massive success as a player and manager of Celtic, but some are questioning his team’s results during his second reign in the Celtic hot seat.

Lennon has won seven of his 11 league games in charge; more than enough to get Celtic over the line, but perhaps not enough to enthuse the fans.

A Scottish Cup victory may be enough to satisfy the board, but the jury is out on whether it would satisfy the fans.

The players are happy with the job Lennon has done, or at least that is what they are outwardly saying.

When James Forrest was asked if he would like Neil Lennon to get the job on a permanent basis, he said: “I think he’s done tremendous. He’s come in at a difficult time and he’s done really well.

“If you speak to any of the boys they’ll say exactly the same. If he gets the job, then everyone will be looking forward to working with him.”

As for Neil Lennon himself, he believes that he is in a “strong position” to get the job on a permanent basis, regardless of the outcome on Saturday.

Lennon said: “I never said I wanted [the manager's job] long term. My contract here expires at the end of May and after the cup final I'll sit down with whoever, and that's always been the case.

"Nothing has changed, despite all the speculation whether I'm getting the job, whether it's Rafa Benitez, Jose Mourinho, Slaven Bilic or whoever.

"As far as I'm aware, the club aren't speaking to anybody until after the final. I'm in a strong position anyway.”
