BACK IN THE DAY

Sunday November 1 2009: Ulster Club Junior Football Championship quarter-final: Shane O’Neill’s (Armagh) 2-12 Sean Dolan’s (Derry) 0-9

Derry’s Sean Dolan’s began the game all guns blazing and were 0-3 to 0-1 ahead at the end of the first quarter, but their challenge disintegrated as a methodical Shane O’Neill’s side dominated key areas.

So superior were the O’Neill’s forwards that goals were inevitable and they arrived in style in the final minutes from corner-forward Neil Paul Lennon and target man Patrick Gregory.

Half-time substitute Kieran Murphy also made a sizeable contribution to the victory, weighing in with 0-4.

The best player on view was the winning captain Brendan Mackin, the orchestrator in chief whose boundless energy and football brain was a treat to watch.

O’Neill’s led 0-6 to 0-4 at the break and went on to control most of the second period, outscoring their opponents 2-6 to 0-3.

O’Neill’s manager Martin Lynch was “over the moon” afterwards, yet also concerned about how his team had taken time to get into the match.

“If you give a team a head-start, the chances are you are not going to get back and that is something we will have to learn,” said Lynch.
