1890: Blackburn's William Townley became the first man to score a hat-trick in an FA Cup final as Rovers trounced Sheffield Wednesday 6-1.

1980: Three-time world champion Nelson Piquet won his first Formula One grand prix, in the United States at Long Beach.

1981: The first London Marathon was staged. Britain's Joyce Smith won the women's race while the men's title was shared by American Dick Beardsley and Norwegian Inge Simonsen, who crossed the line hand in hand.

1988: Lloyd Honeyghan became the first British boxer since Ted 'Kid' Lewis in 1917 to regain a world title, beating Jorge Vaca of Mexico with a knockout in the third round of their WBC welterweight bout at Wembley.

2000: The Football Association dished out record £150,000 fines to Leeds and Tottenham for misconduct in their Premier League clash in February.

2001: Sprinter John Skeete was banned for two years by UK Athletics after failing a drug test, even though the governing body accepted he was "morally innocent". Skeete's dietary supplement had been tampered with.

2008: Derby were relegated from the Premier League with a record low total of 11 points following a run of just one win, eight draws and 29 defeats in the 2007-08 season.

2009: Armagh defender Finnian Moriarty got forward for a goal as Armagh recorded a three-point win over Meath in Crossmaglen.

2011: Ricky Ponting resigned as captain of Australia's Test and one-day teams.

2011: Stuart Lancaster was appointed head coach of England's rugby union team.

2015: Owen Duffy got the goal as Monaghan recorded a brilliant 1-11 to 0-10 League win over Kerry in Tralee.

2016: Remi Garde left his position as Aston Villa manager by mutual consent.

2017: Jo Pavey received the first global medal of her career - 10 years late - after it was confirmed she would be upgraded to 10,000 metres bronze at the 2007 World Championships. Pavey was promoted from fourth place after the IAAF announced Turkey's Elvan Abeylegesse had been disqualified for doping.

2018: Cricket Australia announced that Darren Lehmann would step down as Australia's head coach after the final Test against South Africa.
