1859: George Giffen, former South Australia all-rounder, described as Australia's WG Grace, was born.

1871: The first international rugby match took place at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, between England and Scotland, with the latter winning.

1988: Down beat Derry in Armagh, 2-6 to 0-10, while Dublin overcome Longford at Croke Park, 0-10 to 0-4, to reach the semi-finals of the National Football League 

1988: After more than 1,000 matches in all competitions, former England, Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper Ray Clemence announced he would retire at the end of the season at the age of 39.

1989: Referee Kelvin Morton awarded a record five penalties in the Second Division match between Crystal Palace and Brighton. Only two were converted, one by each side, and Palace won 2-1.

2004: France's 24-21 victory over England gave them a Grand Slam in the RBS 6 Nations.

2007: Tom Hicks and George Gillett's takeover of Liverpool was completed, after shareholders agreed to sell the American tycoons 98.6 per cent of the club's shares.

2007: Arsenal and Chelsea were each fined £100,000 and reprimanded by the Football Association for the involvement of their players and officials in the mass confrontation towards the end of the League Cup final.

2012: England hooker Dylan Hartley was suspended for eight weeks for biting an opponent.

2014: Alex Hales hit an unbeaten century to lead England to a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka and reignite the side's World Twenty20 campaign.

2015: Tottenham striker Harry Kane scored 80 seconds into his England debut as Roy Hodgson's side beat Lithuania 4-0 at Wembley.

2018: Australia captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were sent home from South Africa after Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said the trio were the only members of the set-up aware of the attempts to tamper with the ball during the third Test in Cape Town.
