BALLINAMALLARD United boss ‘Whitey’ Anderson is hopeful that Saturday’s first ever win against Glentoran can spur his team on to greater heights.

The Mallards’ goals came courtesy of Jonathan Courtney on 41 minutes after he was set up by Cathal Beacom and a Beacom free-kick 10 minutes into the second half.

The win means the Fermanagh side sit third from bottom on goal difference from Dungannon Swifts but in touch of a couple of sides above them.

“The most important thing was the three points – we hadn’t won since the first day of the season,” said Anderson.

“We have been playing relatively well all season. We have really only had two bad performances against Crusaders and Carrick, but we have competed in a lot of the rest of the games.

“I thought on Saturday we deserved to win it over the course of the 90 minutes.”

“It was good to give young Courtney his first start of the season. He is a young player who I think has got great ability and hopefully a decent future.

“We play Glenavon on Wednesday night. We’re at home and having beaten Glentoran now, surely that will give the players that wee bit of confidence to go and take the game to Glenavon.”

Elsewhere on Saturday, Crusaders beat Ballymena United 4-2 to close the gap to Linfield at the top to two points with Paul Heatley, Jordan Owens, Gavin Whyte and Jordan Forsythe all on target.

Gary Twigg scored a late penalty to hand Portadown a narrow win against Carrick Rangers.

Glenavon came from a goal down to win 3-1 at home to Dungannon and Coleraine kept up their positive start to the season with a 2-0 home win against Warrenpoint, their goals coming from Darren McCauley and James McLaughlin.

The Seasiders remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
