Alarm over hardship for health workers

There will be considerable concern over the error which led to a substantial number of health service workers receiving wages which in some cases were reduced by several hundred pounds due to unexpected pension deductions.

Union representatives have suggested that thousands of employees at trusts across Northern Ireland were affected, with some suffering serious hardship as a result.

Health administrators have expressed their regret, and said they accepted that the level of consultation about the changes `fell well short' of what was required.

All the staff involved, particularly those in lowly paid sectors, deserve to be given firm assurances that the problem has been fully addressed.
