Relief over discovery of R116

There will be enormous relief that the wreckage of the Irish Coast Guard helicopter R116 has been found off the Mayo coast after it went missing more than a week ago.

The pilot, Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, was rescued from the Atlantic but died in hospital within a matter of hours, and a massive search for her three colleagues has been maintained ever since.

There are indications that their bodies could be inside the Sikorsky S92, which has been located on the seabed at a depth of about 40m, and there will be widespread hopes that the ordeal of their families is coming to an end.

All of the crew members were officers who displayed the utmost courage while carrying out their dangerous duties on behalf of the entire community.
