A fitting tribute to Stephen McElroy

Stephen McElroy was a bright and talented 11-year-old boy from outside Castlewellan in Co Down and his sudden death earlier this year was a tragedy of enormous proportions.

His parents, Pattie and Paul, have now taken the positive step of setting up a charity in his memory which will reflect his love of Gaelic football, soccer and rugby.

As we report today, the proceeds will help to build a sports pitch beside Stephen's old primary school, St Mary's at Dechomet, and also benefit Cruse Bereavement Care.

The McElroy family's determination to reflect his energy for life is hugely commendable and the initiative deserves to be widely supported.
