IRISH soldier Sean Rooney has been remembered at a service ahead of the anniversary of his killing in Lebanon.

Private Rooney was honoured on Sunday at a service at All Saints Church in Newtowncunningham, Co Donegal.

The 24-year-old, who was part of a UN peacekeeping convoy when it was attacked in the town of Al-Aqbiya on December 15 last year, had close links to the Co Donegal town, where he is buried.

He was originally from Dundalk, Co Louth.

Sunday's event was organised by the Irish United Nations Veterans Association.

The gathering, which saw wreaths laid by family members and fellow service members, followed the launch of the Sean Rooney Memorial Cup soccer event in Dundalk's Oriel Park stadium on Saturday.

An anniversary mass for Private Rooney will also take place on Tuesday at Church of the Holy Family in Dundalk.

To date, five people have been indicted on voluntary homicide and criminal conspiracy over the attack - in which three other soldiers were injured - with charges alleging they are linked to militant group Hezbollah.
