Former All-Ireland winning hurling star DJ Carey has appeared in court in Dublin charged with inducing people to pay him money after fraudulently claiming to have cancer.

The 52-year-old former Kilkenny player appeared at Blanchardstown District Court on Friday to face the fraud charges.

He faces 21 charges under the Theft and Fraud Offences Act against multiple people.

He is accused of inducing several of them to pay him money by fraudulently claiming to have cancer and that he needed the money to obtain treatment.

These offences are alleged to have occurred between January 1 2014 and December 31 2022.

He was remanded on bail to appear before Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on November 3.

Carey is one of the most acclaimed figures in GAA history, having won five All-Ireland titles and multiple All-Stars.
