ENYA and her sister, Clannad front woman Moya Brennan, have spoken of their deep sadness following the death of their brother Leon.

Leon Brennan, who worked behind the scenes with Donegal band Clannad for 35 years, died peacefully in Dublin on Friday.

He worked as the band’s tour and production manager and also looked after their merchandise.

Moya Brennan tweeted: "I’m heartbroken, my dear brother Leon passed away this morning surrounded by family.

"I know he touched the lives of many people around the world, and he will be missed so very much."

Enya tweeted: "It is with a deep and terrible sadness that I must announce the death of my beloved brother, Leon."

"Not only was he my brother, but he was my dearest and closest friend.

"My love for him will remain forever in my heart.

"I would ask for privacy at this time."

The Brennan family pub, Leo’s Tavern in Gweedore, has been closed as a mark of respect.

Clannad are one of Ireland's biggest musical exports.

Four of the Brennan children formed Clannad with their uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan in 1970.

They went on to gain global fame with Theme from Harry's Game and In A Lifetime with Bono.

Enya was part of the group in the early eighties before pursuing a solo career. The 60-year-old, known for hits including Orinoco Flow and Caribbean Blue, is the best-selling Irish solo artist of all time.

Funeral Mass for Mr Brennan will be celebrated at St Mary’s Church, Derrybeg, at midday on Tuesday followed by burial at Magheragallon Cemetery.

Mr Brennan is survived by his wife Ann, son Leon, daughter Anna, siblings and extended family.
