AN investigation is being carried out into how Oireachtas officials spent more than €1m on a printer - that could not fit into the Dáil.

It has been reported that Clerk of the Dáil Peter Finnegan is to hold a fast-track inquiry.

It follows revelations that officials spent €808,000 on a printer as well as costly structural works to accommodate the new equipment.

According to RTÉ, emails confirmed the price of the Komori printer and an extra €236,000 to tear down walls and embed structural steel to give it the required height clearance needed to operate.

When the printer, which is 2.1 metres high and 1.9 metres wide, arrived last December, it would not fit into the space.

It was instead placed in storage at an industrial estate at a cost of €2,000 a month, before it was put in place in September this year.

Several Public Accounts Committee members have raised concerns over why the issue was not highlighted during a meeting with officials this autumn.

"I am preparing a report on the matter which I will submit to the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission and the committee of public accounts this week," Mr Finnegan said.

"The report will deal with the full costs associated with the procurement together with any other relevant issues."
