Second sinkhole opens in Co Monaghan

A second sinkhole has opened up in Co Monaghan, close to one that damaged GAA club grounds in September.

The new sinkhole, estimated to be around 30 feet wide, has appeared at Drumgossat, close to Magheracloone Mitchell’s GAA club where a subsidance of around 120 metres in radius previously occurred.

The land on which the new sinkhole has appeared is owned by building materials firm Gyproc, which has mining operations in the area. They have said the latest hole is "entirely separate" to the subsidence at the GAA club, which was thought to be caused by the partial collapse of a disused mine.

A road close to the new sinkhole has been closed, and a spokesperson for Gyproc said the company will carry out "geotechnical investigations".
