A CO Donegal grandfather killed in a freak accident at a garage close to the Derry border was having his car serviced when tragedy struck, it has emerged.

Father-of-three, Mervyn Orr (77), from Carrigans, died at a garage at St Johnston on Monday morning.

The victim had just left his Citroen C4 car into the garage when the fatal accident happened.

Well-known in the border area, Mr Orr died at the scene despite efforts to save his life, including the tasking of the Northern Ireland air ambulance to St Johnston.

Separate investigations have been launched by the Gardai and the Republic’s Health and Safety Authority. The area around the garage remained sealed off throughout Monday.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor, Paul Canning said Mr Orr was highly respected in the Carrigans border area.

Mr Canning said the victim was well-known through fund-raising work he carried out for a number of charities.
