A FORMER INLA man convicted of killing a British soldier has been sentenced at Dublin's Special Criminal Court for his part in trying to force a man and his family from their home.

Declan Duffy (44), originally from Armagh but with an address at Hannover Street West in Dublin, was jailed for six years for falsely imprisoning Martin Byrne in Co Dublin on June 9, 2015.

His co-accused Christopher Maguire (39), of Dun Emer Place in Lusk, was given a three year suspended sentence.

Both men had pleaded guilty.

Duffy also admitted to assaulting John Roche at the Towers, Garters Lane, Saggart, Co Dublin, on the same date.

Maguire had pleaded guilty to falsely imprisoning Lisa Byrne in same place on the same date.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt said yesterday that the crimes happened after a mob had been recruited to intimidate Mr Byrne and force him to leave his home.

On June 9, Mr Byrne's employer took him to an empty unit at Keatings Business Park, Saggart, and left. A gang of seven men then told Mr Byrne he and his family had to leave their home at the Towers that day.

Mr Byrne was later brought to the Towers. He and Mr Roche were later assaulted and Mr Byrne's wife was told to leave her home.

Originally from Armagh City, Duffy was convicted of killing British soldier Sergeant Michael Newman (34) in Derby in April 1992.

The soldier was shot in the head as he left the British army recruitment centre where he worked.

Duffy was convicted of the killing in 2010 but was later released under the Good Friday Agreement.
