FOURTEEN puppies of various breeds thought to be destined to be sold in the UK  were seized by Gardaí at Dublin Port.

The puppies, estimated by Gardaí to be worth around €17,000, were discovered when the officers stopped a car on Promenade Road at 12.30pm on Wednesday.

The dogs were held in two small metal containers in the car's boot which was driven by a man in his early twenties

They did not have access to water or fresh air during the trip, but are believed to be in a healthy state.

Gardaí said in a social media post that the pups were being transported in a 'dangerous manner'.

The dogs were seized  for alleged cruelty after the driver failed to produce valid documentation for them.

They were taken to Store Street Garda station before being cared for by Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals and are expected to be put up for adoption after being monitored for a few days.
