A Newry solicitors firm is providing staff with £125 each to spend on flood-hit businesses in the city.

Fisher & Fisher Solicitors said it hoped the initiative would help support some of the shops and businesses impacted by the unprecedented flooding last month.

At one stage, much of Newry city centre was under water, causing misery for dozens of businesses, with widespread damage caused to buildings, furnishings and stock.

Businesses now have bills running into tens of thousands of pounds as many have been unable to acquire flood insurance for years.

As a way of helping their business neighbours and marking the company's 125th anniversary, Fisher and Fisher are giving every team member £125 worth of vouchers for local businesses.

The vouchers are all being sourced from local businesses impacted by recent flooding including Gordon’s Chemist, Nugelato Ice-Cream Parlour, George Preston Florist and Friar Tucks, Sugar Island, Newry.

Jacqueline Malone from Fisher & Fisher said: “We had planned as part of our celebrations to give our team an extra treat in the run up to Christmas.

"We were however, so lucky not to have been severely impacted by the recent flooding in Newry and other places.

"We really feel for the businesses hardest hit.

"We thought, what better way to support them than by encouraging our team to shop local.”

Eamonn Connolly, Newry Business Improvement District manager, said it is a "fantastic initiative" and a "win win for everyone".

"Fisher & Fisher gets to reward its staff and local businesses recovering from flooding get to benefit from this generosity," he said.

"We really have seen such community spirit in the wake of the flooding in Newry and beyond.

"Small choices really do make a big difference as Fisher & Fisher could have sourced these vouchers from anywhere.

"If any other businesses are thinking about Christmas gifting and would like to support flood impacted businesses, please do feel free to contact Newry BID and we can support you with implementing this.”
