A redundancy scheme has been proposed for staff at the South Eastern Regional College (SERC) amid "budgetary pressures".

The move will impact employees at the college's seven sites across Northern Ireland with a suggestion that 32 full-time and 27 part-time workers take redundancy.

SERC has told staff that its "estimated budget pressure into 24/25 is £7.086m", according to BBC News NI.

"At this stage it appears the budget pressures... can only be addressed by reducing the number of staff employed," the college added.

It comes just two months after college employers informed staff at FE colleges of potential redundancies.

SERC, which has sites in Bangor, Newtownards, Downpatrick, Lisburn, Newcastle, Holywood and Ballynahinch, employs 833 permanent staff and 156 part-time lecturers.

Principal and chief executive Ken Webb has written to SERC staff to outline the redundancy package on offer.

For full-time employees it could be one month's gross basic salary for every full year of continuous service up to a maximum of 21 months, subject to approval.

"The college anticipates that these proposed redundancies will be achieved entirely through volunteers and does not envisage any requirement for compulsory redundancy," he said.

"I appreciate this is unwelcome news and whilst perhaps not unexpected, may be unsettling for you.

"At this stage, we remain fully committed to protecting our front-line delivery wherever possible and working with staff representatives to ensure that all reasonable steps are taken to reduce the number of staff to be made redundant."

Discussions are expected to be held between college officials and trade union representatives next week.

The redundancy process is expected to be completed between March and June 2024.
