A WOMAN in her 30s has been treated in hospital for facial injuries after a firework was thrown at police in south Belfast.

The incident happened on Monday evening as officers were patrolling Belfast city centre.

PSNI Superintendent Finola Dornan said officers narrowly avoided injury when a firework was thrown at them and missed, but it hit a woman who was nearby.

She suffered burns and swelling to her face, and the officers provided first aid at the scene before the woman was taken to hospital.

One person was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault on police, possession of fireworks without a licence and possessing an offensive weapon in public. 

"Our investigation remains ongoing," Superintendent Dornan said.

“Fireworks are dangerous. Their misuse can have a devastating and even fatal consequences. My thoughts go out to the victim who was injured in what was a very traumatic experience."

She said police patrols "will be out and about to deter anti-social behaviour across this Halloween period" and urged wirtnesses to Monday evening's incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1552 23/10/23.
