Roma Downey describes brother's death as 'terrible loss'

Actress Roma Downey has described the death of her brother, Derry diocesan priest Fr John Downey, as a “terrible loss”.

Fr Downey passed away at Antrim Area Hospital on Monday. He had been serving as priest in residence at Ballinascreen parish following his retirement as a curate in the parish in 2019. Ordained in 1984, Fr Downey served in parishes throughout Derry city and county. 

In a social media post, a spokesperson for the Ballinascreen parish said: “It is great sadness that we inform you of the death earlier today (Monday) in Antrim hospital of Fr John Downey, RIP. Please pray for the happy repose of his soul as we thank the Lord for his many years of devoted service as a priest in our parish.”

One of Ireland’s most successful actresses, Ms Downey (63) has spent almost all of her career in the US. Originally from the Bogside, her breakthrough role came in the hugely popular US CBS television series Touched by an Angel in which she played the lead role of 'Monica.'

Paying tribute to her late brother, Ms Downey said on social media: “Friends, my family has suffered a terrible loss. Our beloved brother, Fr John has passed away in the night. We are grateful for all your prayers. His passing was peaceful and that’s a blessing. May he rest in peace.”

Fr Downey’s funeral arrangements will be confirmed later.
