The funeral is due to take place in Co Down of a priest remembered as a "deeply gifted and saintly man".

Rev Dr Father Oliver Treanor died on Sunday following a short illness. 

A former teacher at St Malachy’s College Belfast and a lecturer in St Patrick’s College in Maynooth, he also published several books on the Catholic faith.

A death notice said he would be "sadly missed" by his family and by the "bishops, priests, deacons and religious of the dioceses of Down and Connor and Dromore".

Numerous tributes have been posted on social media, including one from Downpatrick Parish, which said: "Many parishioners will remember him for the excellent course he gave here some years ago on being a reader at Mass."

A colleague also remembered Fr Treanor as "one of the most beautiful priests".

"His holiness, gentle character and quick wit along with a great ability to explain and enhance your understanding of mariology and the eucharist made him very special and endeared him to all his students," the post said.

Another tribute said: "Father Treanor was an exceptional priest and lecturer, and had a huge influence in my own vocational story.

"Every so often, we all meet people who impacts our lives in some way, and Fr Oliver was one of those who impacted mine to be the priest I am today.

"His simple, yet profound teaching, of Mary, and the Eucharist was something which had a huge impact on me.

"He was such a humble priest, and someone who I sincerely thank the Lord, who had an influence on my priestly life."

Another tribute said: "Fr Treanor was a deeply gifted and saintly man.

"He was a true Shepherd, a humble gentleman and I felt honoured and privileged to have known him during my time in Maynooth.

"We will never meet his kind again."

Other posts said "Fr Oliver was a lovely, kind priest" and a "true gentleman".

Requiem Mass for Fr Treanor will be celebrated at St Peter’s Church, Warrenpoint on Wednesday at noon followed by burial in St Peter’s Cemetery.
