Man dies after falling from Scotland bound ferry

A man has died after falling from a Stena Line ferry sailing between Belfast and the Scottish port of Cairnryan on Saturday.

It is understood the man fell from the 3.30pm sailing from Belfast near the port of Cairnryan on Saturday.

It is reported rescue crews were called to the Stena Superfast VIII at Loch Ryan at around 5.50pm.

Stena Line said a ferry rescue boat was launched to recover the passenger from the water.

The casualty was taken by helicopter to hospital in Ayr where he was pronounced dead.

A Stena Line spokesperson said: "Emergency response procedures were initiated, including the launch of Stena Line's onboard fast response craft.

"All relevant authorities, including the Coastguard and Police Scotland were informed and a search and rescue operation was launched."

The sailing was resumed at 8.30pm and the spokesperson added that " a full investigation into the incident is currently under way".

Police Scotland said "inquiries to establish the full circumstances of the incident remain ongoing" and that a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
