Man at centre of Sliabh Liag investigation is from Northern Ireland, reports claim

Access to Sliabh Liag in Co Donegal remained closed on Wednesday.
Access to Sliabh Liag in Co Donegal remained closed on Wednesday.

A man at the centre of a missing persons search in Co Donegal and who is thought to have been the victim of a serious assault is from Northern Ireland, it has been reported.

A Gardaí investigation is continuing in the area around the Sliabh Liag sea cliffs and nearby Killybegs, following an alleged assault last weekend.

Access to the popular tourist spot, reputedly the highest sea cliffs in Europe, remains closed by Gardaí following a large-scale search operation in previous days which involved agencies including the Irish Coast Guard.

A man in his twenties and a woman in her twenties who were arrested in connection with the investigation were released without charge on Monday.

The Donegal Daily reported the arrests followed a tip-off to Gardai that a man from Northern Ireland had been involved in a row with two people he had been staying with in the area.

A Gardaí spokesperson said the investigation remains ongoing, and has urged anyone with information, and motorists with relevant dash-cam footage, to contact them.

Any road users who were travelling in the vicinity between Saturday evening and Sunday evening and who may have camera footage have been asked to make this available to investigating gardai.

Anyone with information can contact Ballyshannon garda station on 071 985 8530, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
