Gardaí in Co Donegal are reported to be examining a blood-splattered car as part of their investigation into a suspected missing person at one of the region's most popular tourist spots.

The Sliabh Liag sea cliffs area in the south of the county remained closed to visitors as the investigation continued yesterday.

A search and rescue operation has been ongoing at the cliffs since Monday.

The car, which The Irish Times reported was found with blood inside it, has been searched by forensic officers following a warrant granted by a judge on Monday at Letterkenny District Court.

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s who were arrested in connection with an alleged assault were released without charge yesterday evening.

A house in the nearby town of Killybegs has been cordoned off as part of the Gardaí probe, with officers searching the property.

Public access to the mountain remains closed to facilitate the ongoing garda investigation.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses to the incident between Saturday and Sunday, and urged road users with relevant dashcam footage to contact them.

Any road users who were travelling in the vicinity between Saturday evening and Sunday evening and who may have camera footage have been asked to make this available to investigating gardai.

Anyone with information can contact Ballyshannon garda station on 071 985 8530, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
