More action is needed to "prevent other young children losing their lives in such deplorable and heart-breaking circumstances" like five-year-old Nadia Kalinowska, a local MLA has said.

Alliance's Paula Bradshaw said "we owe it to Nadia" to ensure that help is out there for children in the north.

It comes after Nadia's stepfather, Abdul Wahab, was told this week that he must serve at least 22 years in prison for her "brutal and merciless" murder.

Her mother, Aleksandra Wahab, was jailed for five and a half years for allowing the death of a child.

The little girl died in December 2019 after being found at her family home in Fernagh Drive, Newtownabbey with more than 70 injuries including a fractured skull.

A court heard earlier this year that she had also suffered a lacerated liver, which caused her death as well sustaining fractures and re-fractures to her ribs, a fractured collarbone, a fractured pelvis and an injury to her bowel.

The injuries were inflicted over many months.

At the time she died, she also had surface injuries including bruising and abrasions and her teeth were decayed and rotten.

Abdul Wahab had claimed she was clumsy and had fallen down the stairs on the night she died.

He later pleaded guilty in court and was given an automatic life sentence.

Speaking outside the court in Belfast on Wednesday after the sentencing, Detective Inspector Gina Quinn said Nadia was "a young and innocent child".

"(She) had been subjected to a campaign of violence by her stepfather, while her mother ignored the very obvious attacks being carried out on her young daughter," she said.

Det Insp Quinn read a statement from Nadia's family in Poland who said she was a "child who had her young and innocent life cruelly taken away".

"To be honest our worlds have been shattered," the family said.

"Nadia will always remain in the heart of her loving grandmother and her closest family in Poland."

Ms Bradshaw, Alliance's health spokesperson, said on Thursday that more help is needed for children at risk in the north.

“Everyone was horrified by the tragic death of young Nadia Zofia," she said.

"However, words are not enough: we need to move quickly to prevent other young children losing their lives in such deplorable and heart-breaking circumstances.

“This week we saw the launch of the Review of Children’s Social Care Services in Northern Ireland.

"This report laid bare the huge pressures on our social workers and other healthcare providers struggling to cope with the rising number of children at risk, living in circumstances where they are being physically, emotionally and psychologically abused.

"We must embrace the findings in this report and ensure the delivery of its recommendations.

"We owe it to Nadia and the many other young people who have or, unfortunately, are currently suffering abuse.

“We need to see the Assembly restored as soon as possible to allow for the passing of a Bill to remove the defence of reasonable chastisement.

"Other parts of the UK have introduced this type of legislation and we, in the Alliance Party, want to see children and young people in NI afforded this same protection under the law."
