Gardeners are being encouraged to get creative this summer with the first ever Mad Hatters Day at Antrim Castle Gardens.

Would-be milliners will have a chance to show off their skills as part of this year's Garden Show Ireland on June 16.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has encouraged visitors to make their own horticultural hats or headpieces and decorate them with flowers, vegetables or foliage.

Participants can also bring a hat and get help to decorate it either from Flower Farmers or representatives from Greenmount College.

With the event compered by UTV's Pamela Ballentine, the winning designs will be selected by a judging panel including model-turned-horticulturilist Marie Staunton, horticulturist -turned-millner Marie Claire-Ferguson and world-famous garden designer  Diarmuid Gavin.

Speaking ahead of the competition, Mr Gavin said: “We can’t wait to see the hat and headpiece wonders on the first day of the show.

“It’s all about having fun and showing us something new and imaginative.”

Up for grabs for the winning entry is a Food NI hamper of artisan foods worth £300.

Garden Show Ireland will take place over three days from June 16-18.
