Sinn Féin candidate Jude Mallon, whose son died suddenly less than two weeks ago, has won a seat on Armagh City Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.

Mr Mallon topped the poll in the Craigavon ward, elected on the first count with close to 2,000 votes. He was a first time council candidate.

His 15-year-old son Caoimhín, a pupil at St Ronan’s College in Lurgan, died on Sunday May 7. It is understood the teenager, who had asthma, collapsed at home and was rushed to Craigavon Area Hospital.

Mr Mallon was one of two Sinn Féin candidates elected in the Craigavon ward along with one DUP, one UUP and one Alliance. The SDLP fared disastrously, losing both the seats it won in 2019.
