A 45-year-old man who was arrested under the Terrorism Act in relation to a series of attacks in north Down has been released.

Detectives from the Paramilitary Crime Task Force (PCTF) have linked the attacks to a feud between drugs gangs, and had made the arrest after a search in Newtownards on Thursday.

A police spokesperson said the investigation continues and that officers would maintain a highly visible presence in north Down.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed they are investigating after a crowd removed insignia relating to the South East Antrim UDA from a housing estate in Newtownards.

Around 50 people gathered in the Weavers Grange area around 8pm on Thursday before items including plaques and murals were removed.

PSNI Superintendent Johnston McDowell said: "Police evidence gathering resources were already present and additional police resources were immediately tasked to the area.

"Within 15 minutes a further crowd of more than 50 people had arrived on foot into Weavers Grange."

While he said there was "no disorder" during the gathering, he said the crowd had ladders and removed South East Antrim UDA insignia from the gable ends of houses before leaving.

Anyone with information on the ongoing feud has been asked to call 101, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
