THE Christmas Market is returning to Belfast City Hall this weekend, heralding the beginning of the city's festive seasonal celebrations.

The continental-style market opens on Saturday, as events including a Christmas parade and the unveiling of city centre illuminations take place.

There will be no official Christmas lights switch-on event for 2022, but Saturday's celebrations will also include live music performances in the Royal Avenue area.

It is estimated the annual festive market contributes to an economic impact of up to £75 million for the city, and this year will include stalls selling food, drink, crafts and more representing 21 countries from across Europe and further afield.

The family favourite visitor attraction is is run by by Market Place Europe, which has recently been awarded a contract to host the event for a further three years.

Its managing director Allan Hartwell said: "We have made a renewed investment in the market to make sure it feels as special as ever."

The market is also supporting the Pretty in Pink charity, supported by Belfast lord mayor Tina Black.

"The charity does such amazing work, and over the years has supported so many families who are going through a cancer diagnosis and treatment; so this is a great way for people to give something back and people can be assured their donations are going to a fantastic cause," Ms Black said.

The market will run from 12 noon on Saturday through to 6pm on December 22.
