RENOWNED actor Stephen Rea was among the guests as the Belfast Film Festival closed in style at the weekend.

The festival, which had launched on November 3, finished on Saturday night at Cineworld Belfast with the Irish premiere of Aftersun, starring Paul Mescal.

The poignant father-daughter drama was written and directed by Charlotte Wells and premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival in May.

Around 400 guests attended the final Belfast Film Festival event, where the winner of its first ever international competition was also announced as Return to Seoul, by a jury comprising of BAFTA and Academy-Award-winning director Andrea Arnold, renowned actor Rea and producer Catherine Bray.

Homegrown drama Ballywalter, starring Co Down-born comedian Patrick Kielty, had opened the 2022 Belfast Film Festival earlier this month. The Prasanna Puwanarajah-directed drama is Kielty's first feature-film acting role.

It tells the story of a budding stand-up comedian who develops a touching friendship with a down-on-her-luck taxi driver, played by Seana Kerslake.
