Post mortem examination were due to take place last night and today.

In an update last night, gardaí said the mother of the victims, aged in her 40s, had been released from hospital while their 14-year-old brother remained in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A suspect known to the victims, aged in his early 20s, was arrested at the scene after being subdued by members of the Armed Support Unit (ASU) using non-lethal weapons.

It is believed all four siblings were stabbed using a large bladed object.

The upstairs windows of the property in the Rossfield Estate were open and smashed, while blood stains could be seen on the window frames.

A smashed downstairs window also remained open while forensic officers examined the front garden.

A black car outside the property was also a focal point of the investigation.

Forensic officers removed a number of items from the scene, including a shoe, small bag and black coat which were placed in forensic bags.

Neighbours yesterday told of how they heard screaming coming from the house shortly after midnight, with a female voice shouting "help me, help me" as well as the sound of windows smashing

Gardaí last night said they "continue to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the deaths".

Tomás Hayes, principal of St Aidan's Senior National School where Chelsea and Christy attended, said they were "deeply saddened by the event that occurred over the weekend".

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the deceased," he said.

"As a school, our priority will be to take every step to ensure that the needs of our students and their families are met, at this challenging time.

"We will be providing support to pupils and school staff to help them deal with this tragedy and have requested the support of the National Education Psychological Service in this respect."
