POLICE last night said that a pedestrian aged in his 60s has died after being hit by a lorry in Newry.

The collision happened on Kildare Street on Monday afternoon.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police received a report shortly before 4pm that a male had been struck by a lorry close to traffic lights in the area.

"Sadly, the male died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

"We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have any dash-cam footage or information which could assist officers with their enquiries, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, and quote reference number 1350 of 29/08/22.”

The name of the man had last night not been released.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old woman questioned by police after a pedestrian died when he was hit by a car in Co Antrim has been released on police bail.

John Corr from Ballymena died after being struck on Cushendall Road in the town at about 10.20pm on Sunday.

The 57-year-old, who was from the Dunclug area and known as JC, was walking along the road when the collision took place. He died at the scene.

Requiem Mass for Mr Corr is due to take place tomorrow in All Saint’s Church Ballymena at 10am followed by burial afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Crebilly.

Police said on Monday that the woman had been detained on suspicion of several offences.

She was released on bail last night, pending further enquiries.
