FAMOUS for its trademark ivy covered walls, a hotel in the Glens of Antrim has been receiving a "bit of tender loving care".

Work has been carried out on the well-known Londonderry Arms Hotel, after the ivy began to grow over the roof of the landmark building.

Located in Carnlough, the picturesque venue was first opened in 1847 with many of the unique Georgian features of the hotel still remaining. It is a popular place for many tourists and visitors as they enjoy the spectacular Antrim coast road and Glens of Antrim.

Hotel owner Denise O'Neill last night said they had carried out the work after the "ivy had begun to take over the roof".

"It really had got too much over the roof and it had got to the point that the fabric of the building was being affected," she said,

"Now with it being cut back, you can now see the top of the roof again and you can see the dramatic architecture that lies beneath.

"We brought in a team of professionals to do it as we are mindful of the protection of wildlife as the work was carried out."

Ms O'Neill added: "Obviously we have had the Covid pandemic and we are recovering from that, but the building still demands attention and it's the responsibility of owners like ourselves to give buildings the attention required so that they can be maintained for future generations.

"It was a good time for the work to be done, to give it a bit of tender loving care as we are now opening our way fully for people to come and visit the Antrim coast again."
