FORMER tourism head Don Wilmont has died following a short illness.

Mr Wilmont, from Bushmills, Co Antrim, was one of the founding members of the Northern Ireland Tourism Alliance (NITA).

He was formerly Chief Executive of Causeway Coast & Glens Regional Tourism and was chairman of Visit Derry.

He died yesterday morning. A funeral service will be held at Mosside Presbyterian Church in Ballymoney on Tuesday at 11.30am followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.

The NITA said Mr Wilmont's passing was a "big loss" for tourism in the north.

"Don was one of life’s true gentlemen who was always generous with his time and brought a pragmatic approach and his warm humour to the many challenges that we had to face," an NITA spokesman said.
