A sister of Disappeared victim Seamus Ruddy and her husband have died within hours of each other.

Patsy and Peter McAteer from Newry, who were married for 62 years, were buried on the same day following their deaths last Thursday.

As tributes were paid to the couple as "respected members" of the local community, their grandson said "they couldn’t live without each other in this life or the next".

Mrs McAteer (79) died at Craigavon Area Hospital, while her husband Peter (83) died at home later that evening.

Requiem Mass was celebrated for couple in St Catherine's Church Newry on Monday, with burial afterwards in Monkshill Cemetery.

Mrs McAteer was the sister of Seamus Ruddy, who was abducted in Paris in 1985 and murdered and secretly buried. The INLA later admitted responsibility for his death.

The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains eventually recovered Mr Ruddy's remains in a forest in northern France in 2017 following new information given to them by the INLA.

Mrs McAteer had campaigned for many years with her siblings and other families for the location of his body to be revealed.

Following the death of the couple, their grandson, Kevin McAteer, a former independent councillor for Newry, wrote on social media of how he was "absolutely gutted to lose my grandparents".

He said: "62 years married and they both pass on the same day.

"How sweet is it that granda Peter passed only a few short hours after his wife.

"The old romantic, they couldn’t live without each other in this life or the next. Granda Peter and nanny Patsy raised us, Patsy was like a mummy and nanny rolled in one.

"Granda was a gentleman and one of the nicest men you will ever meet.

"They will be missed. Love you both very much."

In a post on Facebook, Newry's Lisdrumgullion Community also offered its condolences to the McAteer family and said "the married couple of 62 years were respected members of our community and will be sorely missed."
