SDLP councillor Séamas de Faoite has said he believes a DUP representative who pronounced his name wrong "can do better" after working with him for two years.

His comments come after Brian Kingston mispronounced Mr de Faoite's name as "councillor de Failte" during a Belfast City Council meeting last week.

Fáilte is a well-known Irish and Scottish Gaelic word for welcome, while De Faoite is an Anglo Norman name, anglicised as White or Whyte.

After he was reminded by Mr de Faoite of the correct pronunciation during the meeting last Monday, Mr Kingston is reported to have replied: "De Faoite, I will practice whatever way you want to pronounce your name".

Several other councillors criticised Mr Kingston for his pronunciation.

Fiona Ferguson of People Before Profit said Mr Kingston had given "an unacceptable response to being corrected on how to pronounce another councillor's name".

Lord Mayor Kate Nicholl said: "We all need to be respectful, particularly around names".

After reports of the incident circulated on social media, Mr de Faoite wrote on Twitter: "Sigh. Yes, Brian Kingston pronounced my name wrong.

"Yes I think he can do better after working with me for two years.

"Was that the most pressing thing we discussed on Monday night? Absolutely not - LGBT+ hub, business committee stitch-up, COP26 and much more were discussed."

Mr Kingston has not commented on the matter.
