Professor Ian Greer, President and Vice Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast, and President of Universities Ireland, will be among those taking part in an online event today which will discuss the future of education on the island of Ireland.

STUDENTS and teachers are to examine how to enhance access to higher and further education - particularly in border regions and for minority groups.

A virtual event, which is part of the Shared Island Dialogue series, will hear from several education experts.

The series was launched by Taoiseach Micheál Martin last year as part of the Irish government’s Shared Island initiative.

The dialogues aim to foster constructive and inclusive civic discussions on all aspects of a shared future north and south, bringing together people from all communities and traditions through the framework of the Good Friday Agreement.

Today's discussion will explore issues including educational underachievement.

Dr Noel Purdy, Director of the Centre for Research in Educational Underachievement at Stranmillis University College will be among those taking part.

Dr Purdy was the chairman of the expert panel that examined and propose actions to address links between persistent educational underachievement and socio-economic background in the north.

During the event, there will be a focus on "innovative connections on a shared island". Students and young teachers will speak about the opportunities they see for furthering cooperation and connections through school and extra-curricular activities on an all-island basis.

There will also be a discussion around the opportunities and challenges for enhancing access to higher and further education, particularly in border regions and for students from minority backgrounds.

The discussion will also address student mobility.

Among the others taking part in the panel discussions are Professor Ian Greer, Vice Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast.
