A 'rainbow crossing' in support of the LGBTQ+ community has been unveiled in Derry.

The road crossing in the colours of the Rainbow or Gay Pride flag has been created behind Derry’s Guildhall, linking the city centre with the Peace Bridge.

Foyle Pride Festival made the suggestion and it was taken up by Derry and Strabane council with funding put forward funding from an underspend by Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon to cover the project’s cost.

Pride chairman Jim Doherty said the the rainbow crossing followed similar projects in Camden, Berlin and San Francisco, adding he was particularly pleasing that the crossing was in such a central location.

Former SDLP mayor, Brian Tierney - who helped bring the project to fruition - said it showed that Derry was a welcoming place for everyone.

SDLP leader and Foyle MP Colum Eastwood also welcomed the unveiling of the crossing.

"Derry is proud and welcoming to everyone," he said.
