FORMER boxing champion Barry McGuigan has said his family's "hearts are broken" that his late daughter Nika did not live to see the premiere of her last film, Wildfire.

A special outdoor screening of the film was held in Barry McGuigan Park in Clones, Co Monaghan, last night.

Ms McGuigan has already won a posthumous IFTA best actress award for her performance in the film.

She died in July 2019, aged just 33, following a battle with cancer.

Mr McGuigan, who became World Featherweight Champion in 1985, said he was touched that the screening had been held in his home town as part of the Clones Film Festival.

"It is a fitting tribute to her legacy and exceptional talent," he said.

"Our hearts are broken that Nika is not here to see the success of her last performance but my family and I are comforted to see it on the big screen with our friends, family and the community in Clones."

Wildfire's Newry-born writer/director Cathy Brady, who won an IFTA for her directing work on the film, and Ms McGuigan's co-star Nora-Jane Noone were among those who attended last night's screening.

Best known for her role as Danielle in RTÉ's Can't Cope, Won't Cope, Danika McGuigan, known as Nika, was hailed as one of Ireland's most talented actresses.

She had previously fought cancer between the ages of 11 and 13.

In her final screen performance, Ms McGuigan plays Kelly who, along with sister Lauren (Nora-Jane Noone), has been torn apart by the mystery of their mother's death.

Wildfire will be released in cinemas across the Republic and the UK from September 3.
