TWO murals commemorating a teenage boy and a mother-of-three who were killed on the same day 40 years ago are to be unveiled today.

Danny Barrett (15) and Nora McCabe (31) were both shot a day after the death of hunger striker Joe McDonnell.

Danny was killed by a British soldier in Ardoyne on July 9, 1981. The schoolboy was hit by shots fired from an army observation post as he sat on the front garden wall of his home at Havana Court.

Gunmen close to his home had fired at an RUC Land Rover.

The innocent youngster was killed in return fire from a soldier. Noone was ever charged in connection with his death.

Tonight, a mural in his memory will be unveiled at Havana Court at 7pm.

Meanwhile, in west Belfast, a separate mural will be unveiled in memory of a mother-of-three who was shot and killed by the RUC on the same day.

The family of Nora McCabe, who was 31 when she was struck by a plastic bullet as she was returning from the shops, are to hold a vigil and unveil a mural in her memory, to mark the 40th anniversary of her death.

The event will be held at 7pm at Linden Street, off the Falls Road where she was shot.

The RUC had claimed there was rioting in the area at the time following the death of Joe McDonnell.

However, their claims were contradicted as the incident was caught on film by a Canadian film crew.

Noone has ever been charged in connection with her death.

On social media her daughter Aine said her mother was not "just a victim".

"She was a mother, a wife, a sister. She didn't get to see her grandchildren but she is still a grandmother," she said on Tik Tok.
