REPUBLICANS are expected to attend a commemoration in memory of an IRA man killed 40 years ago this weekend.

George McBrearty (23) died along with fellow republican Charles 'Pop' Maguire (21) during a gun battle with undercover British soldiers in Derry on May 28 1981.

A family commemoration organised by Mr McBrearty's 91-year-old mother Bridie and other relatives is held in the Creggan estate every year.

In 2017 they unveiled a new mural on the gable of his niece's house in the area.

This year the McBrearty family has revealed plans to plant a special tree in the garden of the same house in memory of republicans who died during the Troubles.

The family hope 'Crann na Poblachta', The Tree of the Republic, will become a focal point of remembrance.

Ms McBrearty last night urged people of all backgrounds to attend.

She encouraged those taking part to place a little memento of loved ones on or near the tree.

"We invite everyone from across the republican spectrum be they party affiliated, group affiliated or community activists to come along and remember our fallen," she said.

Ms McBrearty urged people attending to take proper health precautions.

The speaker will be former H-Block blanket man and author Richard O'Rawe, who acted as PRO for the hunger strikers in 1981.

"It's an honour to be able to commemorate George and 'Pop'," he said.

"But it's also an honour to commemorate our ten brave hunger strikers and this is their fortieth anniversary as well."

The commemoration will take place in the Creggan estate on Sunday, May 30, at 2pm.
