THE Irish government has announced €12 million for phase 2 of restoration of the Ulster Canal.

The announcement by Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Heather Humphreys, Minister for Rural and Community Development, will see work take place between Clones and Clonfad.

It will see construction of a new marina at Clones, access bridges, an amenity area with parking and new tow paths and walking trails.

Almost half of the money has been approved under the Rural Regeneration Development fund, with the remainder coming from the government’s Shared Island Fund.

Mr Martin said: "It has been a long-standing government priority, with an important north-south dimension, and today’s funding announcement will ensure that the pace of progress can be accelerated."
