A Co Down nursery assistant is to walk 84 miles in 24 hours to raise funds for young people.

Connor Annett, who is from Tyrella, will travel from Portrush to Newcastle in support of Action for Children.

The father-of-one, who works at a nursery in Crossgar, is undertaking the challenge on March 24, which is his 24th birthday.

Having set up a JustGiving page, he is hoping to raise £2,000 and has already reached almost half the target.

A dad to a five-year-old son, he said he has felt "very humbled" over the Covid lockdown.

"It really made me realise what is important and the many things I am grateful for. I have a young healthy family and that's all I'm in need of," he said.

"I wanted to do something for children.

"I decided to go with Action for Children. They have an office in Downpatrick and they run the Sure Start programme in the town. They also have a mental health programme for high school children and run all the parenting classes that go alongside the Sure Start."

Connor will set off at 11am on Wednesday from the beach in Portrush and walk to Belfast before continuing through Carryduff, Ballynahinch, Seaforde to Newcastle, where he will finish in Donard Car Park.

He said while his family have been very supportive, they have also expressed "how mad it is".

"All of my birthday presents this year has been stuff I need for the walk," he said.

"I have been practising and I got up to 46 miles."

He said he is indebted to those who have supported him so far and made donations.

"People have given me a lot more than I expected. I am delighted," he said.

"I am hoping for the best."
