A daughter of John Hume is among the speakers in a new series of seminars organised by the foundation established in her mother and father’s honour.

The series, which explores the contribution to peace building by young people around the world, will begin on Monday with “The Missing Peace”.

Established following the Nobel Laureate’s death last August, the John and Pat Hume Foundation aims to promote their legacy by embracing the principles of “partnership, respect and resilience”.

Professor Mo Hume, who holds the chair of Latin American Politics at the University of Glasgow, is one four speakers on Monday.

The talk will be presented by Graeme Simpson, who was commissioned by the UN in 2015 to carry out a global study on youth and peace-building.

A spokesman for the Hume Foundation said the talk would launch a new series of seminars in which an online platform would be created for young leaders from around the world every six to eight weeks.

“A key message of this report and subsequent peace is to recognise and support young people as positive contributors to peace, moving away from a deficit model that sees young people as a threat to security."

Also speaking on Monday will be the chairman of the International Fund for Ireland, Paddy Harte, and Prof Brandon Hamber, who holds the John Hume and Thomas P O’Neill chair in peace at Ulster University.
