Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey last night said those responsible for shooting a man in a paramilitary-style attack in west Belfast "have absolutely nothing to offer our society".

A man was shot in the lower leg at around 8.15pm on Wednesday in the Good Shepherd Road area of Poleglass.

Police have launched an investigation and have appealed for information.

Mr Maskey said the local community do not want to see guns brought on to our streets.

"I completely condemn this attack and again call on those responsible to leave the scene as they have absolutely nothing to offer our society," he said.

"Those involved are anti community and represent no one apart from themselves."

SDLP councillor Brian Heading said: "There is no place for this kind of vicious attack on the streets of Belfast.

People in this community don’t need it, don’t want it and don’t deserve it," he said.

"Those responsible need to get off our backs."

He added: "I would appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in or around Good Shepherd Road to come forward to police.

"We need to help identify those responsible and get them off our streets."
