A CO Fermanagh man accused of involvement in a 'New IRA' attempt to murder a policeman outside a Belfast golf club was refused bail yesterday.

A Belfast Crown Court judge ruled that there were no sufficient changes in the circumstances in the case of 40-year-old Peter Thomas Granaghan to warrant his release on bail.

Granaghan from Blackrock Park in Belleek, denies making and possessing explosives and the 'New IRA' attempted murder of an off-duty police man on June 1, 2019.

A previous court heard the off-duty officer discovered the booby trap bomb below his car while it was parked at Shandon Park Golf Club. He had just finished a round of golf at the east Belfast club and was walking back to the vehicle when he spotted the device.

Ammunition technicians carried out a controlled explosion at the scene to disrupt the device and seize items for forensic examination.

It is claimed that in subsequent forensic tests, a partial DNA profile allegedly belonging to Granaghan was found on electrical components of the device. The match was said to be a billion times more likely to have come from him than anyone else.

However, the defence argue it is agreed that it can't be said when or how the partial DNA samples obtained from wiring and a battery connector on the device could have come to be on the components.
