TWO primary school pupils are "over the moon" that their painting of deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill has been used on her official Christmas card.

P7 pupils Lisa Kerr and Maria Conway, of St Brigid's PS, Mayogall, Magherafelt, Co Derry, painted Ms O'Neill as part of a class project to mark education minister Peter Weir's visit to their school.

Pupils also painted MLAs including Mr Weir, Alliance leader Naomi Long and First Minister Arlene Foster.

St Brigid's principal Mary O'Kane said the pupils received a phone call from the Sinn Féin vice-president's office asking for permission to use the picture on her Christmas card.

"It just shows the talent in our school," she told the Belfast Telegraph.

"We've got fabulous children and no matter what's going on around them in the world at the moment, they still surprise us with their creativity."

She added: "For it to be used by Michelle O'Neill on her official Christmas card is just fabulous... Pupils now think they are almost famous. Lisa and Maria have been left over the moon since they found out about the card."

Ms O'Neill said she was delighted the pupils had given their permission.

"The portraits certainly brought a smile to my face when I saw them first," she said.
