An anti-mask protest took place outside BBC NI’s headquarters in Belfast city centre at the weekend.

Organised by Yellow Vest NI, the movement staged the protest outside broadcasting house on Saturday.

There was a heavy police presence at the event as a counter demonstration by Belfast Anti-Fascist Alliance was also staged.

A speaker from the Yellow Vest NI movement said it was a “grass roots and cross-community movement” which works to protect “civil and religious rights”.

Speaking on a video recorded of the protest, he said the group represents “hard working men and women who have been forgotten by a broken, corrupt system” and “strives to give a voice” to concerns and issues from the general public.

Another Yellow Vest NI speaker then took to the stage and asked: “BBC, why are you telling lies?”

“Half the country is in the house, scared to leave the house, because they think people are dropping dead everywhere,” he said.

“This is why we picked the location today because we want answers... every single one of us here is being attacked by mainstream media.”

Talking on Facebook after the event, Belfast Anti-Fascist Alliance said it had been “a very successful day of activism” as the Yellow Vest NI movement “had to chop and change their plans”.

A similar anti-mask and anti-lockdown demonstration also took place in the Guildhall Square in Derry on Saturday.
