A CAR found on Saturday in the River Bann in Co Derry is thought to be connected to a man who went missing 29 years ago.

A recovery operation was set to take place after the Ford Orion was found in the river at New Ferry Road in Bellaghy.

Police said it is "potentially linked" to James Patterson who went missing on October 6, 1991.

Mr Patterson, aged 54 and from the Magherafelt area, was last seen visiting someone at Mid Ulster Hospital.

The car was discovered by local Community Search and Rescue.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Once the vehicle has been removed from the water, it will be subject to forensic examinations."
